The Model: LightGBM + Poisson Ensemble

At the core of MatchMind sits a hybrid ensemble that combines two complementary approaches:

LightGBM Gradient Boosting

LightGBM is a state-of-the-art gradient boosting framework widely used in data science competitions and production systems. It excels at learning non-linear relationships between dozens of features and a target outcome. Our LightGBM model is trained on the full historical dataset with careful cross-validation to prevent overfitting.

Poisson Goal Model

Football goals follow a roughly Poisson distribution. We fit a separate model that estimates the expected number of goals for each team, then simulate thousands of scorelines. This gives us probability distributions for exact scores, over/under thresholds, and both-teams-to-score outcomes.

Feature Engineering

Raw data alone is not enough. Our pipeline engineers over 50 derived features, including rolling averages, Elo-style ratings, form momentum, fixture congestion indices, and recency-weighted head-to-head statistics. These engineered features capture the nuances that simple stats miss.

How Confidence Scores Work
